I can't tell you its the best, but Ubuntu is pretty good. It comes with (version 6.06) three years of supprot for desktop users and five years for server versions, free (and nearly automatic) upgrades, and a great tech support forum that really does try to answer your questions. Forget Mandrake, their support isn';t even as good as Windows. Can't tell ya about any others, as I have not tried them. But I'm quite happy with Ubuntu, compared to Madrake (now called Madriva) Ubuntu is easy, and stable, and FREE. Madrake/Mandrive is over $80 for a decent distro, and their support leave much to be desired.

Honestly, for beginners, Ubuntu is the best. It sets up everything for you, so you don't really have to muddle too much in the setup. Easy to use, constantly updated and developed, and best of all it's free.

They also give you a free manager so you can easily download and install as well as update programs that are compatible with the OS with the click of a mouse button.

Depends on your own taste really. I use Fedora Core 6, but other will say they prefer another distro. I found FC6 installed easily, and found all my hardware and peripherals just fine.
