As I recall the main reason was they wanted a clear ethereal voice that was more pure than Geddy's. As for how they met with her, I think it was arranged by the record label, but I'm not certain. I'm sure I read this on one of the major fan sites and/or the Hold Your Fire tour book, or perhaps a rock line interview. If I can find the source I'll post it.
They also contemplated having a different vocalist for the "chant" section in Roll the Bones, but decided that Geddy's voice dropped an octave was the right vibe. Oddly enough I think I heard that from the professor (or Elwood if you've read his books...aka Neil Peart - pronounced PEERT!!!)
