To provide a thorough answer. My percentage was much higher, and more rewarding, when I provided a thorough answer, and the asker selected it as best answer.

Recently, I have gone to brief answers, and my percentage plummeted down to 18 percent.

I am going back to the detailed answers, and fewer of them, and counting on the asker to select mine as best, rather than have it win by one vote.

One of the most thorough and best answerers on this entire site, frequently gives long and detailed responses. Her BA percentage runs between 40 and 45 percent on average, usually selected by the asker. In one case, Marilyn vos Savant, the woman with the highest IQ in the world, chose her's as Best Answer, and it was detailed, thorough and informative.

We know the game. Mine was 25 percent until I ran for a coffee mug, even though I frequently answer in a category where I am unlikely to be chosen as best answer.

It really depends on the nature of the question. Some questions can indeed be answered in short statements - while others often require detailed answers. For example, when someone is asking how to do something, they are going to want detailed steps on how to do it. I always try to answer a question in the way I think will be beneficial to the asker. In your case, I figured the best way to demonstrate the reasoning behind a long winded answer was to answer you in that same manner! :)

Some of the questions require length of writing to give a detailed answer. Some of the answers are just a quick reply to gain 2 points and not very informative.

Some answers need to be long. One of my stock answers is approximately 180 words long (I've just used Word to word count it) and I refuse to shorten it any more because I believe that not only does it answer the question, it provides further answers that may arise from actually following out the inital instructions.
