CHENNAI: The Manila-based SPI Technologies Inc, Asia’s largest independent business process outsourcing (BPO) firm, has reportedly bought Kolam Information Services Pvt Ltd (Kolam), a Pondicherry-based BPO firm. Kolam provides BPO services to leading book publishers including the Oxford University Press and Macmillan. The acquisition is part of SPI’s plan to expand further in publisher business service vertical and journal production services.

Sources close to the development told eFE that the Manila firm has wrapped up Kolam for Rs 23 crore. “It provides SPI a headstart in the publishing sector as Kolam is already a known BPO firm in the niche vertical. SPI has a strong presence in the publishing sector and has plans to expand its operations further”, sources said. Company officials, when contacted, however refused to comment. Post acquisition, SPI is planning to scale up Kolam’s operations considerably, sources said.

Kolam offers a range of BPO services to the publishing industry which include design, project management, editorial and other production functions. It has a project management facility in St Louis (US) and has three production facilities in India. Kolam has a staff strength of over 300 people.
