Why aren't there any colored people playing hockey?

Update:

i understand that there are some blacks, but what i mean is that only 1 out of 100 players are black...why? As opposed to the other sports, where it is quite evenly distributed.

Ravi Shankar, go back to ashram and play your sitar. Hello? There are not a lot of blacks in the areas where hockey is #1. There is your answer. It's not some sort of Jackie Robinson needs to make the breakthrough, dude.

Why not say why are there so few Americans in MLB now? There's a better question. Why is the World Series virtually ignored (the Uber Bore gets about 4 times as many people watching it than the WS)?

Hockey is flatly popular in nations that are cold. Just becuase a team is in Tampa does not mean blacks in that area wil play hockey. Does not work that way.

Julius, there is no need to get angry over silly comments lol Well the first black guy to ever play in the NHL was named Willie O'ree from New Brunswick, Canada and he played for the Boston Bruins. The guy is still alive so it is still kinda recent history. He went through a lot of crap while playing as u can imagine but ever since there have been more and more blacks playing hockey. Look at Iginla, Subban, Simmonds, Byfuglien, Ward etc. There are blacks in the NHL but people make no big deal about it, as long as they are good it's fine. As of other colors, you have Gomez who is Hispanic, Carey Price who is half native (but looks white lol), René Bourque who is métis, Jordin Tootoo who is native...the NHL is more diverse than you think. The number is growing but don't expect to see an all black or all colored NHL team lol. I think that kids having someone like them to look up to has something to do with it. And of course hockey is expansive..or it also depends on how hockey is popular for some of those kids too. It has more to do with culture and environment than colored people not having skills

Part of the reason there are fewer minorites playing hockey is the expense of raising a kid, while giving him the best opportunities to play an develop as a player. Ice time, equipment, traveling teams, coaching, clinics, all cost big $$$. The sad truth is most caucasian families (American, Canadian or Euro) tend to be able to absorb this financial burden more easily.

Another reason is the presence of Euro players. The NHL has the highest concentration of European players in any major American league (barring perhaps the MLS). Look at the team rosters and tell me how many Russians, Finns, Swedes, Czechs and Slovakians dominate the rosters.

There are many players in the NHL who are minorities, Richard Park (Korean), Donald Brashear, Georges LaRaque, Jordan Tootoo (Native North American), Anson Carter, Freddie Brathwaite, and several others. Even in the minors (Shawn Belle comes to mind). The point is, while not the most diverse league from a racial standpoint, the NHL is a very nationality diverse league and I've seen more and more minorities on skates in the last couple years than I have previously. I look forward to seeing more in the future.

Colored? What decade are you from?

The population of Canada is mostly white or indigenous. There just aren't many black people in Canada.

In the United States, the cost of equipment precludes African Americans from participating in hockey, so they choose other sports. A sad economic reality, but true.

The remainder of the players are from Europe, which is also overwhelmingly white.

There are more black players in the NHL that at any other time: Carter, Iginla, Laraque, Weekes, Brashear & Grier, off the top of my head. It may not be many, but in the 1970's there was one, Mike Marson, and he played for the Capitals for one year and disappeared.

Jordin Tootoo and Jonathan Cheechoo are both First Peoples, and Richard Park is Korean, Olaf Kolzig is South African, Rick Chartaw was Venezeulan, Scott Gomes a Mexican from Alaska, and Rod Langway was born in Taiwan. The problem is in countries such as India, or most parts of Africa and Asia it doesn't snow(except maybe in the mountains), they don't grow up playing hockey all winter long.

i dont know..there are some tho in nhl..like on the devils there is oduya. Hockey is more of a canadian sport, and not many colored ppl are canadian..plus no offense at all (this goes for the ghetto colored people) they think if they play they are gonna be called "white boy" and plus theyre too busy participating in street violence in all that. And in america hockey isnt very advertised..mostly soccer basketball football and baseball are..so people cant really get into hockey. Although my friend who is colored never even payed attention to hockey but over the weekend i got her to like it :D maybe if it was more advertised and affordable more ppl would play

If more colored people moved to northern counties, there would be more who are playing hockey.

I've taught in a small southern town. The water never froze and the closest ice rink was over an hour away. Most people in this town never even put ice skates on.

Jarome Iginla, Trevor Daley, Mike Grier, Georges Laraque, Manny Maholtra, and Anson Carter off the top of my head. Also, there are other minorites, for example Jordin Tootoo is the first Inuit to play in the NHL. So, they do play just not in big numbers. I can tell you that racism on both sides is a factor in the numbers. Some "Colored" folks think that it is a "white person's sport" and some whites think that minorities should not play hockey.

The S>>>> Mark Recchi is white or if you where thinking Mike Ricci he is white too. there are lots of coloured players in the NHL today from, Ray Emery (OTT) Georges Laraque (PHX) Donald Brashear (WAS) Manny Malhotra (CLB) Jerome Iginla (CLG) Fred Brathwaite (ATL) Anson Carter (CLB) Trevor Daley (DAL) Jamal Mayers (STL) Nathan Robinson (BOS) Bryce Salvador (STL) Anthony Stewart (FLO) Chris Stewart (COL) has played yet, playing for Kingston Frontenac's OHL. Kevin Weekes (NYR) Peter Worrell (free agent playing in minors) Mike Grier (SJ) and there's some more that played throughout the years and a great name come to mind Grant Fuhr goalie for the Oilers back in the 80's.

Willie O'Ree was the first black NHL player in the history of the game:

In 1958 a young man named Willie O'Ree made his debut in the National Hockey League. He was with the Boston Bruins for two games. In 1961, after two more years in the minors, O'Ree had a longer stay with the Bruins--41 games. O'Ree never played another game in the NHL.

This may not seem particularly significant, but O'Ree was different from every other NHL player who had come before him during the league's first 50 years. He was black, and there wouldn't be another black in the NHL for 25 years.

Felix>>>> hes talking about ICE HOCKEY yes hockey.not field hockey if he was talking about field hockey it would say field hockey when they say hockey its also ice hockey, the best sport in the world.
