Sadly, most people hate fruitcake -- because they have never had a genuine cake made in the old-fashioned way (soaked in brandy or rum). The real thing is more fruit than cake and it is not dry, but very moist and has complex flavours. It is delicious, but people only know of the dry, tasteless stuff that is bought in stores. The authentic fruitcakes (homemade) are a real treat, and they are absolutely nothing like the store-bought ones that most people hate.
As for it being a tradition, it has been an English tradition for centuries (the same can be said for the English steamed "plum" puddings.)

Here are a few links explaining the origins to various holiday things, including the fruitcake. And just for fun, I included a link to a few Christmas superstitions.
Disclosure: Of course, it is from the Internet and explanations may very greatly!

I suspect its a combination of historical and cultural issues converging.
Back before refrigeration dried fruit was the only way to eat fruit in winter, and thus was, in a way, a rare and special treat.
So you end up with people exchanging fruitcake as a gift.
I recall as a child - that guests frequently brought it to whomever was preparing the christmas meal.
(some of the relatives I had as a child were born before refrigeration was common...).
Just my guess.
