I remember seeing part of an old b+w movie where
a common fellow gets extraordinary powers. Everything
he thinks of becomes real. Of course he eventually finds
that absolute power becomes too much and I think he
destroys everything. I think it was english....Does it ring

You're remembering The Man Who Could Work Miracles. Made & released in England in 1936, starred Roland Young as the meek clerk who the gods give the gift of miracles. Written by H.G.Wells, also author of The Time Machine, The Invisble Man, War of the Worlds..
A fun and sometimes thought-provoking little comedy, with some very good special effects for its time. It's been released on VHS & laserdisc, but I don't know if it's bveen released on DVD just yet.
