Story Line Idea (need advise)?

I got the idea from the upcoming Die Hard 4 (Live Free or Die Hard)..

and want to write it.

a 16 year old kid is the best computer hacker on earth.. he has robbed banks, hacked airports, government buildings and much more right from his own computer.

But no one has ever caught him.

He is employeed through different ways by a dark group with unknown motives hidden under the disguise of a computer company.

When they ask him to hack the Department Of defense mainframe and nearly cause a disaster, he gets caught.

As the FBI prepares to put him on trial, the group needs him back.

And they have the second best hacker under employment.

Now as the US falls hostage to attacks that are crashing planes, banks, government installations and more, the government will have to call on the kid to stop him.

Don't let the critics get you down before you even start. The best thing to do is just write!

It looks to me like you've got your plot sketched out and the desire to go ahead is strong, so by all means do it. Even if you do nothing more than get a first draft down and then put it aside for awhile to review later.

Fact is, a lot of stories have similar sounding plots. It's been happening since the dawn of time and will continue when we are all dead and buried. The thing that makes a story unique is the characters, not the events. Otherwise there would only be ONE boy meets girl story, ONE govt espionage film, ONE pirates sail the high seas, and so forth.

After you have written your first draft, then take a look at your story for scenes that can be removed/changed/filled out and all the other things too like character arc, loose threads, plot holes and so forth.

Something else to consider is looking into learn how to write in screenplay format, especially if you are writing this with the intention of it being a movie.

    Good luck!

This could be a great story. If you write this, you will find that your storyline will need some dramatic additions. This sounds like a thriller, so you will have to give us a reason to care for the kid. Is there a secret motive that the kid has? Does the second best hacker have a reason to be a turncoat? Will the kid gain any knowledge from the experience? Does he have a character flaw that would stop him from being successful in his duties to save the world, and that someone is there to support and help change him? What do you want the reader to gain from this story?

I'm not looking for an answer to these questions, they are designed to help you think about how you are going to develop the characters and how the story will ultimately unfold.

I have seen a very similar plot where a kid hacker does a few bad things, gets caught then works for the government against those who were with him.

I don't think this plot would work if you are thinking of making another movie. There are possibilities using this plot in a comic book or book for 10-15 year old kids.

Problem is it is very tough trying to crack into this niche of writing.

    I wish you luck, though.

There isn't actually a question in this listing; however, here are a couple of thoughts in response to the implied question.

    1) The basic "pitch" is interesting.

    2) The quality of the writing here will be presumed to reflect the potential quality of the eventual product. So, ensure your writing is grammatically correct.

    3) It is not enough to have an interesting premise. You must also have characters with complex motivations and engaging back stories.

    Good luck.

I really like the general idea here a lot. However, I might make the main character a bit older so that this movie/book/whatever doesn't turn into another Agent Cody Banks. With, say, an 18-year-old character (at least) general audiences won't flinch so much at this guy's behavior.

It sounds very interesting it seems as though i've heard a similar plot before, but don't let that discourage you....everyone is different and you may be able to put a certain twist in this story that other wouldn't have thought of...only real criticism i can think of is raising the main character's age....

    keep writing and good luck!

  • Good idea but the only problem is your going back and forth too much with your main character. The group, the FBI, the group, then back to the FBI. No one will like to read about a main character who's loyalties are so unstable. Don't go back and forth with him so much and have his loyalties clearly laid out.

That sounds like a good plot, but I wish you would have let it sit and build up in your head instead of giving it to us. Once your plot is out, its out, and it loses a little bit of its magic.
