Has Chrysler killed JEEP?

Is it just me or is Jeep dead? To me it started with dumping the Cherokee in 2001 in favor of the Liberty. (Side note the new 2008 Liberty is a reworked/refaced Dodge Nittro.) Now there is a Compas(Dodge Caliber), the Patriot (front wheel drive) And the bigger soccer mom friendly mini van V6 powered Jeep Wrangler. A Jeep (I'm talking orig open air type vehicle) is a vehicle that when you take it off road one can hose it off inside and out. It is a vehicle that the owner can work on and modify him/herself w/out an advance degree in enginering from Brown. I'm not saying that the won't Wrangler be a good off vehicle. I just think that none off roaders shouldn't have such a big influence on how the JEEP should ride or if it should have all the creature feature as the H2 or H3( over priced Tahoe and Cayan). Then there is Chryslers stupid "Trailrated" badge. Marketers suck! Is your Jeep better than my jeep because it has a badge? No! Its just a sticker!

Yeah, now jeeps are all pretty and girly, that isn't what they are supposed to be. Jeeps are for off terrain and slinging mud.

It's like all of the car companies are targeting 40 something soccer moms.

Yes they did, just like they killed Plymouth and AMC. IMO, the real Jeep is the one that is open-air/convertible top variety. As far as I know they haven't killed that specific one....yet.

Dodge will be next in line to die. The dumbest move to date was to delete the Neon in favor of the Caliber. As it stands now Chrysler does not have a truly fuel efficient vehicle..(ie gets 30 or more mpg in the city). The Caliber maxes out at about 29 and the PT Cruiser gets about 24/25 in the real world with an automatic.

To the person who said "Working on your own car is going away."...I would like you to tell that to the people around here who drive older or antique cars and others who restore cars for a hobby. In my area I'm starting to see more and more older cars on the street rather than new ones. For many people a new or newer car is simply a luxury they can't really afford.

The liberty was the death of jeep as a viable brand. The oversized plastic killed the grand cherokee just like it killed the grand prix for pontiac. Lose the bloated plactic coated jap eyed (tailights) and get back to designing vehicles and not cartoon (game boy) versions of cars and trucks. Can't sell ugly cars and now you are determined to make ugly trucks.

Working on your own car is going away. New cars have so many computer aided and electrical options they can't be repaired at home by the average person. Any change on the engine will likely increase the emissions, illegal in most states that I know of.

The company as a whole has done some really dumb things...like getting rid of the neon during a gas crunch...simply brilliant!
