Has Chrysler Killed JEEP?

Is it just me or is Jeep dead? To me it started with dumping the Cherokee in 2001 in favor of the Liberty. (Side note the new 2008 Liberty is a reworked/refaced Dodge Nittro.) Now there is a Compas(Dodge Caliber), the Patriot (front wheel drive) And the bigger soccer mom friendly mini van V6 powered Jeep Wrangler.

A Jeep (I'm talking orig open air type vehicle) is a vehicle that when you take it off road one can hose it off inside and out. It is a vehicle that the owner can work on and modify him/herself w/out an advance degree in enginering from Brown. I'm not saying that the won't Wrangler be a good off vehicle. I just think that none off roaders shouldn't have such a big influence on how the JEEP should ride or if it should have all the creature feature as the H2 or H3( over priced Tahoe and Cayan).

Then there is Chryslers stupid "Trailrated" badge. Marketers suck! Is your Jeep better than my jeep because it has a badge? No! Its just a sticker!

No, JEEP isn't dead. It's just been made more available to the masses. Chrysler is in the business of selling vehicles, and rebadging some of their vehicles as JEEPs is going to bring folks to the party who never considered joining.

The Wrangler will always be around as the off-road truck of choice for JEEP lovers. Just think of the newer vehicles as bringing a little culture to the family.

Keep in mind that Chrysler is expanding the Wrangler line (4 doors anyone?) to invite those folks who were entertaining the competition back into the fold.

Sure it's not purist JEEP, but then again, purist JEEPs aren't for everyone.

Chrysler hasn't killed Jeep but it has made some moves which have hurt the Jeep image. The "Jeep Lite" vehicle, Compass, was not well received by the general public or Jeep fans, and they've had some quality issues with the Liberty as well.

Chrysler is doing an excellent job with selling the Jeep brand and image overseas. The new Wranglers and Unlimited seem to be good vehicles and have gotten really good reviews by thge critics. If they work out some of the bugs, the Jeep name will be strong for a long, long time.

Much agreed. The CJs and the Willys were the offroader's dreams. Solid axles (front and back), basic interior (no leather, no power seats, no cd player, just a speedometer, oil pressure gauge, oil temp gauge, battery meter, no carpet, 2 front seats of vinyl and that's pretty much it)
