As far as I know, Kim is Korean (my roommate has this last name). There is a kim pronucation in Cantonese, but as far as I know, no names.

The name Kim in Korean transponds to the character 金 jin1 in Mandarin. This means metal or Gold.

Im affraid your friend is Korean, not Chinese. Unless Kim is a chosen English name. Might wanna ask before you show your ignorance and offend that person forever.

Kim? I think that sounds more Korean. Another thing, are you sure that this is his last last name, or is this one of the two to four characters in a name? Please give more details. I can only come up with one word, and it's 金, it means gold...
