A cracked nail? My dog gets those all the time but they never seem to bother her. If she's licking it there might be some kind of open wound from it if it cracked down to her nail bed. Go out and buy some betadine antiseptic (costs about $8). It's a liquid and its brown. Mix it with water and put it in a bowl and put your dog's paw in it. If there is any open wound this will clean it out to prevent infection. I would do this at least once a day for a week. My dog had a open cut on in between her paw and I did this. I talked to the vet on the phone and she complimented me saying this was a wise thing to do and told me to watch it and if got worse or bothered her more to bring her in. No sense spending a ton of money if you can correct the problem at home. But, after this if you are still noticing this is bothering your dog or gets worse or if she is having problems walking on it then take her to the vet. And try to keep her away from it! When you see her licking it do something to distract her to keep her from licking it, she will irritate it more if she keeps doing this.

If she's licking it that means it is hurting her. Take her to the vet. You don't want it to get infected. The vet can give her something for the pain.

If it's just one nail no problem but if this happens on another nail it could be S.L.O.W. It's a "lupus type" disease in dogs. My dog has it. It causes the nail to tear away from the nail-bed. This is VERY painful for the dog.

    Good luck.

unsure what you advise by employing low. If it somewhat is in direction of the top of the toenail, use some styptic powder (or cornstarch). If it somewhat is have been given a crack in it, a coarse spot, then you could take him to the vet and have it decrease lower back. If it has a coarse side, and you do no longer decrease it off, it gets caught on each and every thing and could injure him extra. If it somewhat is up close to the paw, then he will definately could desire to work out a vet.

Mine had one when he went in for his regular shots and the Vet told me never to ignore a cracked claw -- it can keep cracking and eventually might need to be removed. He cut the claw below the crack and cauterized the vein so the blood would stop. Nail grew back great.

If it doesn't seem to cause any discomfort then get the stuff from a nail bandage from the drug store and then wrap the foot in gauze to prevent the dog from eating it off. If it's not bleeding, I don't think you need to worry.

So does mine. His left rear leg, he was licking it and limping. I can't afford a vet now. Did the logical thing. Put him in the tub and washed the foot (soap, antibacterial if you got it) and rinsed it. Then poured peroxide on it twice so it don't get infected.

He has been fine so far so good. Good Luck.

Take to the vet! It may not be painful now, but it could easily become infected. It really needs to be clilpped or taken off completely. This happened to one of my pups and we had to have it removed. He is perfectly fine now. Good luck!

Maybe I'm anal about such things, but I always take my dog to the vet if I think it's something that could be infected.

You can call the vet but chances are he or she will tell you to just keep it clean and disinfected (try hydrogen peroxide) and it will just grow out in time.
