what would cause a truck not to start on the first try?

turns, but wont run until the second time. 99 ford explorer, battery is 2 years old.

    my 98 ford f150 did that with the 4.2v6 it cranked hard and didnt start until you did it again it was the fuel pump relay for me wouldnt hurt a try only 8 bucks.

    As a other member stated it could be a fuel pump relay. If the relay was bad the engine would have to build up oil prs to make the fuel pump run which would take a while while cracking the engine. It could also be a bad check valve in the fuel pump. The gas would drain out of the lines and would take a while to refill them.

    If it turns over strong the first time your probley not getting gas. If it has a small gas leak it will lose it's prime and takes time to pump gas from tank to engine

    it could be a low battery, or a starter relay or the starter. probably just a minor fix.

    Give it some gas!

    Get a tune-up?

    Give it some injector/carb cleaner?
