Has anyone found a computer that "works" (i.e. functions normally)?
As technology has advanced, so has the ability and speed of computers. However, the number of worms, viruses, shut downs, collapses, errors, crashes and other technical disasters have also increased. Why is this and what is a computer that minimizes these annoyances?

If you are looking for a computer less at risk get a MAC. There is still no virus to date that has infected and spread from a MAC to another.
I use PC's however because of their upgradability. If you keep a clean computer, and take basic security measures and stay up to date on them you will never have problems. You need a good virus program, several spyware/malware scanners, and atleast one good firewall, either hardware or software, but atleast one good one. If you use their abilities on a regular basis you will have no problems.
You also need to practice safe surfing. Don't click on ads or popups, crack sites, warez, and porn is probably the biggest culprits of spreading problems.

The computer has little to do with it. It's all in how the computer is built, maintained and used by the operator.
I know plenty of people still rocking desktop P3's with no problems, other than it being a bit slow. I've been crash free (except for the infrequent hardware issue) for years. I don't download crap, I never click on random email links, I update my Windows boxes frequently, etc.

100% in agreement with the poster who said it is who is operating and maintaining the machine. If you keep your anti-virus up to speed, run it regularly, run your anti-spyware/ad-ware programs...you should have no issues...and of course, watch what you download from the internet. There are a lot of things that are bundled with spyware and crap from online.
Many crashes and that also result as a conflict of software (or are just software issues, in general) and not the computer.

The *brand* of PC is not relivant to it's ability to get viruses. Many brands of PCs come pre-bundled with viruses.
Use Linux or buy a Mac if you don't want to deal with Spyware and Viruses. Otherwise practice safe internet habits. I run 3 Windows PCs and never get viruses. It is entirely possible not to get them.
Good luck.
