A standard baseball has a cork or rubber core to it; it's roughly the size of a quarter. Around the core are layers of yarn and twine, sometimes wool. Two peanut-shaped cowhide leather covers are then stitched together with 108 stitches of waxed red cotton thread; rolled stitching is flatter and creates less air-resistance. Baseballs usually weigh no less than five ounces and are no less than nine inches in diameter.
