HOW DO YOU SPELL the Italian word that sounds like "Capish" - (and means "Understood...?" or "Got it...?")
Usually heard in gangster movies - when somebody snarls (what sounds to me like) "Capish" in menacing tones...
I've checked Italian dictionaries but can't seem to find the word - probably because I DON'T KNOW HOW TO SPELL IT...!!!
Thanks v/much folks - especially "Chickpea" "b1931073" and "fonography" - you did me proud...!

Capisce?
Capisce is an Italian word that initially became popular in English in the 1940s, popularized by Italian immigrants in America's eastern cities and by use in onscreen portrayals of Italian-Americans, often in organized crime rôles.
It means "Get it?" and comes from the Italian the verb capire, to understand. It is commonly mispelled and mispronounced, and has been rendered in English as "coppish," "capeesh," and "kapish,"[1] among other variations.

If you say:
"Capisci ?" = Understand?
"Capisco !" or "Ho capito!" = I see / I understand.
But is mispronounced intentionally as "Capice" because in South Italy people speak with a different accent or speak a different variation (dialect).
quote: comes from the Italian word "capisce,"
based on the verb "capire," meaning "to understand," and can be used as either a question or an answer.
Like many dialect words born in immigrant communities.
I agree with Chickpea.

It is capisce. The sc in this case makes a sh sound. It is from the verb capiscere, or to understand. Most Italian words end with a vowel, thoug it is often not pronouncedin everyday speech.
