    Unplug from the Net

Remove all temporary files and do a thorough clean up of your system. Defragment at least 3 times.

Turn off all background services, use "Start" > "Run" > type "msconfig" and turn off everything in the "Startup" tab.

Restart the machine, just click "ok" in the config utility and then install SP2 preferably from disk. If you don't have a disk you can order one from Microsoft....

Once installed remember to turn on you system services and away you go. If you have downloaded it it may be corrupted so you could try downloading again.

    Hope this helps

Hmm, I've been looking at this for a few mins and racking my brains. As to the above answer, it wouldn't start running if a pirated licence key was found, and that it gets halfway suggests a biiger issue. Not knowing the extent of your knowledge, I'd suggest first that you download the standalone installer (available here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?Fa... - it's the advanced version but don't worry).

If this fails to work, it probably suggests some form of corruption or virus on your system which will be causing the problem. I'd suggest burning all of your important files to a DVD/external hard disk (including the SP2 installer) and reinstalling windows. You should have a disk which came with the PC when new and you can find the licence key on the side of your machine (unless you bought a copy of XP from a shop in which case it's with that). Good luck with the installation, any probs just ask.

The cause could be for a number of reasons; for example - do you have any pirated Microsoft software on your PC(?) or is it your firewall and/or anti-virus software settings? You can obtain from Microsoft SP2 on CD which may be the best solution for you - go here for web site to order CD: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.msp...

    Bye and good luck
