Why is it that some Christians are so hypocritical?

Fragility... Imperfections. That is part of being Human.

"Only God is perfect all others must do the best we can"

Knowing right does not always mean we can achive it,

I too like Ghandi's quote. He was an amazing man. Rare person.

Because they are human. Just like the hypocrites in other religions and all walks of life.

Sad that religious devoutness doesn't cure that.

But there will always be people who use the doctrines of their religion to justify what it is that they want to do, and actually allow themselves to feel "righteous" about doing that. There will be people who view their "salvation" or "enlightenment" or whatever, not as a blessing GIVEN to them, but as proof of their own superiority, which in turn can be used as a justification for being hateful or smugly superior and self-justifying.

I have seen that in my own religion - people who are hypocrites - who SAY that there is no one right way to have a relationship with the Divine Source, but act as if they are "better" than people who have a different religion. I'm not talking about personal preference - I'm talking about a smug superiority that they have found the "best" way.

I mean, I too think that there are religions that are more beautiful than others, but I absolutely don't think that my way is the "only true" way of having a relationship with the Divine.

If we are to judge religions by their followers, no religion can be said to be without hypocrisy.

It has to do with the lack of fearless and brutally honest self-examination, of a lack of existential courage in examining our motives.

Many of us want to feel that we are better than others. Many of us feel that we need to make others wrong in order to feel right, ourselves. This is found not only in religious people, but in non-religious people, too.

It seems to be a VERY common characteristic.

God wants spiritual fruit, not religious nuts.

The Christian life is not meant to be a list of rules or "do this and don't do that." We are saved by the grace of God through faith. Even so, we are to live the Christian life in the power of the Holy Spirit by faith.

  • Perhaps it is because Christ was perfect (example) for us imperfect human beings.
