Anyone Know Good Book to get for an 8 Year Old with Social/Repect Issues?
I was wondering if anyone knew of a good book to get for an 8 year old with severe social/respect issues. His parents are not doing a good job with this one. He is home schooled, pretty much gets away with everything & is only happy when the world revolves around him. I sure some of it is just reaching out for attention, but he needs to learn a better way to do this.
I am talking about my cousin. His behavior is so bad, my grandparents who LOVE everyone can't stand to be around him.
His problems consist of the following: he flips people off (not really he uses his pointer finger, but he means it that way), he interrupts conversations ALL the time (you pretty much can't have one around him), he doesn't respect other peoples things, etc...
Looking for book suggestions that convey the proper way to act. I would prefer if the book wasn't blantly obviously, but ones where the story convey this general idea. The story needs to good, so he will actually read it. So, any ideas?
In case anyone is wondering I did ask this question in another category, but I thought I would try here as well.
Also, in case anyone did not catch it in the question...THIS IS NOT MY CHILD I AM REFERRING TO, it is my cousin.
More info...
My Aunt, his mother, is divorced from his dad, but he acted like this before that. His father could really care less (not a strong male role model).
Also, his behavior got a little better when he went to public school for a while. But I think my Aunt got lonely and pulled him back out again. He is now being home schooled.
Once again, thanks for anything that you come up with. The whole family is trying to sneak things in this year for Christmas. My parents are getting him a Bible for kids. Other people are getting him stuff along same line.

What about Captains Courageous by Rudyard Kipling? (http://www.amazon.com/Captains-Courageous-Classic-... It's a classic, and while it doesn't really instruct the reader on etiquette, the moral of the story is that spoiled brats are worthless and that a person must earn respect.

Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary
Because of Wynn Dixie by Kate DeCamillo
Little House in the Big Woods by Wilder
Shiloh
My Side of the Mountain
The Sugar Creek Gang series
Sounder
The Pink Motel
The Moffats
I'd say ask your local librarians.

Does he like to read?
One author that boys tend to like (I taught middle school English and write for children--www.cdawnmccallum.com), is Gary Paulsen. His book, Hatchet, and the other books in that series, give kids a new look at life. It's a survival story, very engaging, and the character struggles with a lot.
I just read your extra info: I think he'd really like Hatchet.

what about something that shows him what he really has? the diary of anne frank is an excellent eye opener but it might be a bit heavy for him..number the stars by lois lowry might be more appropriate. its for 9-12 year olds.
