Chunky dog?

According to the vet, my dog is a little on the chunky side. She isn't a cow yet, just a little plump. He wants us to put her on a lean diet so she can lose about 10lbs. Can you suggest a decent brand? I plan to slowly switch her, so she doesn't get poopy. If it helps, she is a mutt (heinz 57, we have no idea what she could even come close to) and weighs about 60 lbs. She also goes on nightly walks and doesn't get people food.

Update:

She eats Beneful now, the vet said specifically to stay away from Alpo. He said it was one of the worst things I could feed her.

I would recommend not using Beneful, it is pretty much loaded with junk, sorry. I would look at other brands that have healthier ingredients in them-for example, Eukanuba Reduced Calorie, Petsmarts Authority brand may have a reduced calorie diet as well. Good Luck.

PS-Be sure to change your dogs diet gradually over at least 15 days to avoid digestive upset.

My dog was at 97lbs and the vet told he he had to drop down to 75-80lbs.. He's a lab.. I put him on Science Diet Light Large Breed cut the recommended measurement in half and subited the other half with frozen veggies and baby carrots as treats.. After a year and a half he is down to 84.. And don't forget plenty of exercise...

He fav veggies are chopped broccoli and spinach, cauliflower and brussel sprouts..

Its hard but it can be done...

Give her less portions, and do not keep her bowl filled. Only give her food at the time you want her to eat. If you use a lite formula, use the same brand as you are already using, it will have some of the same ingredients, and will be fine.

There are many lite brand dog foods, I had a Cocker Spaniel and he had to be on lite food, it helped him loose weight. Go slowly in getting your dog to loose weight so she'll stay healthly. Purnia offers books and a measuring cup and other helpful stuff for pets needing to loose weight. Good luck.

Its good you don't give her people food. thats how most peoples dogs get fat. Take her out on longer works or one in the morning and one at night. and see if the brand you give your dog for dog food has a diet food.

We feed our dogs Innova, which doesn't even offer a "diet" kind of food, you simply reduce the amount of feeding as instructed on the bag.

Usually, you can find the ''lite'' version of the brand of dog food that you're feeding her, already. That's the best way to go.

increase her exercise slightly but not to much and take her out morning and night. see if they do a weight control food in what youre feeding her now. and cut out any doggy treats/chews she gets.

alpo makes food for over weight dogs. Your Vet should have told you this
