Why Are American Students Lazy?

It seems to me that Yahoo Answers is a forum for students at any level to get the answers to the questions they are supposed to solve. Explain to my why you would so willingly give the student, whom you do not know, the answer to a question. Wouldn't you rather direct them as to how they can solve the answer on their own? (i.e. "look in the textbook" or "read 'The Catcher In The Rye' for yourself")

I prefer to tell the student, when it is obvious they are fishing for the answer, to figure out how to answer the question for themselves. After all, when they get out into the work world, they won't be paid to have someone else do their work for them.

Why are they so lazy and why do you help them?

Update:

I am a born and raised American Citizen. My question is serious and it points to why we are so far behind educationally.

I told a student that they could get into trouble for plagarizing and my answer got deleted and I got docked 12 points.

I agree with you totaly though, it seems that todays students are lazy, and unwilling to actually do anything as far as research.

I once showed a group of college seniors a 6th grade McGuffy Reader and they were blown away by it, none of them believed that it was on the 6th grade level.

I think the main reason for this is outcome based education.

It is easy to make sweeping generalizations. American Students are not lazy as a whole. Some are, some aren't, some need help, others don't. Not all the students on yahoo answers are American. Not all the answers on Yahoo answers are correct. Many comments are to do their own work. Some are answers by fools who get some kick out of knowing they screwed up some kid who was too lazy to do his or her own homework. Look at the requests for the obvious do my homework questions. The answers they recieve are rarely appropriate homework answers. Some students just talk on here to find someone who will help them because they are not getting that help elsewhere. Thats not lazy. Why are you on yahoo answers? You like to see your opinions, no matter how stereotypical or insulting in print. Some people answer because they like to see that they have a right answer and that someone who listens will appreciate it.

To begin with... We are NOT "behind Educationally" although the Press wants us to think that we are. Our students that are tested are among all educational levels. In almost every other country in the World, Only the Best are allowed to remain in school. In parts of Europe, about age 14, testing separates those who may remain and who may not in school. The Japanese wives do not work. It is their JOB to see that the children are successful in school. The testing process decides whether or not they are able to remain in school. WE expect every student to get an education. Our children are also living with every electronic device available. Many in foreign nations do not have that luxury (SPOILED?). I do not believe that these students have to be spoon fed on here but, at work they will have resources that are in many cases not available in school that they will be able to use. I generally give them sites to view so they can research the question. "LOOK IN THE TERXTBOOK" and "READ..." is the way you might talk to a DOG not a young man or woman that asks for assistance. I know students that take a lot of time working before asking some of these questions and they do not need someone like you treating them BAD. Think about what you are doing to others. GOD expects us to treat others as we would want to be treated. I did not send this to upset you. Please take it in the right way. Have a great weekend!

I wouldn't call it laziness, sometimes people need to hear an outside source or someone Else's point of view on something to truly understand it. Its a form of discussion that ultimately leads to a greater understanding of things. There is nothing wrong with asking for help every now and then just as long as they don't take it for granted and abuse it. Just think of it this way, I'm sure you could of came up with an answer to your own question but you would also like to hear what other people have to say.

Unfortunately, laziness has become part of the American culture. Gonja and video games contribute somewhat, and education is rarely viewed as a privilege anymore.

Fortunately, some serious students do exist who do appreciate a good education.

Yes it is a shame, but I got a feeling it isn't just American kids trying to get someone else to do their homework.

its not just american students on here you know, and i'm sure that the over all the percentage is very low for students that use this service for answers on homework.

personally, i ask question when i can't find it in the textbook and no one is around to help me. you shouldn't put every american student into one catagory.
