Of course it works.
Cabbage soup (or any vegetable soup) is very low in calories. So, rather than eating 300 calories for the whole day in soup, you could pick 300 calories of anything else within the realm of being healthy and get the same effect. Cabbage doesn't have any "magical" properties.
For the same amount of calories you could pick lean chicken or fish to cover your protein requirement and an assortment of the same veggies that are in the soup.
Vegetable based soups are popular on the Kimkins diet.
Keep in mind that diets only "work" if you permanently change your food choices. Otherwise you'll gain it all back.

Any diet that requires too little calories intake always lead to a weight loss failure. Your body requires a certain amount of calories per day to survive. If you go too low, your body will try to protect itself by slowing the metabolism.
Will you lose weight? Of course....
It is gonna be mostly water, some muscles, maybe fat (if any).
Will you gain it back? Of course.... Plus more..
Diet can cripple your metabolism and makes your body get better at converting food into a fat to protect itself.
I am sure that you know some people that eats very little all the time and yet still be overweight. The reason why is that when you starve yourself (diet), your metabolism slows down.

Well I had a freind try it and she certainly lost the weight fast but it was all water weight and as soon as she stopped it all came back. She got terribly sick from malnourishment so in the long run it caused her more problems then benefits.

Fruits are the immediate supply of vitamins, proteins, and electrolytes, so over body can certainly absorb them. Found in the case of veggie some of the immediately eatable but some need to cooked well for enhance their taste.
