Are Other Retailers getting sick of the loooong holiday hours?

I'm a salaried manager for America's 3rd largest retailer and finding the 5am opening and midnight closes tiring AND a little silly.

Does anyone really sell enough outside of regular times to justify these hours?

bah, humbug

I worked retail for 4 years and swore to never go back again, largely due to those ridiculous hours.

I've worked in retail in Phila, PA, Bethelehem, PA and Washington, D.C. and at no point was it ever justified to open stores that early. I suspect they open that early because other stores are doing it, so we have to as well.

    Ridiculous.

The only place I can think of where it makes any sense is in New York City, New York - specifically Manhattan. Just because it's one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country doesn't mean every store in that chain has to open! Heck, why not throw a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade everywhere there's a Macy's in the country, too?

Indeed, bah humbug, and that's just for thinking of past memories. Good luck.

I managed a pizza place for years and the holidays sucked. You always have to work when the rest of the world is out having fun. I now will not go to a store or restaurant the day before or the day of Thanksgiving or Christmas. Companies need to put people before profits at least a few days a year. America needs a few days to remember what else there is to life besides buying things. I work in an office now and get treated like a humanbeing.

It sucks, but, as you may already know. retailers are expecting a semi-lackluster spending season.

This may be the reason for extended hours.
