Donate used books?
I have a few really good books that I bought from Borders. It just takes me about 2-3 days to polish them off and I do not re-read them. Are there any organisations that I could donate these books too, particularly to help with illiteracy or low income households?
I live in St. Louis, MO but I am willing to ship the books anywhere that the need is.

I work at a library, and get asked this question a lot, as our library only accepts some donations. In my city, most hospitals, nursing homes, and homeless shelters (particularitly for women) are very grateful to receive donated books. I suggest calling an institution that you would like to help and asking them if they could use some books.
Of course, since these are new books, you could also try donating them to a public library branch in your city, maybe a branch in a low income area. The library is a social equalizer, after all.

Try your library! Libraries sometimes have book sales--but, then again, the money from these sales goes to help the library, not any illiteracy programs or anything like that. Still, donating books for others to borrow, or for other people to buy at a CHEAP price is pretty helpful to low-income families/individuals. Usually paperbacks are 50 cents to a dollar.
Another idea is to check if there's an American Association for the University of Women in your area (if you're in the US that is.. or some other similar charity). Many sects of this organization have book sales that occur once or twice a year, perhaps more than once in your area. People donate books, others buy them, and the proceeds go to help women in universities.
I can say, though, that thrift stores aren't a good idea! I help out at a thrift store, and I don't know if it's different for any other place, but books don't sell often here. Sometimes we end up throwing stuff out, and some stuff ends up going on half.com, because people just won't buy it in our area.
If you donate to a store, try to donate to a used book store.

This time of year, many bookstores have drives to collect books for local charities (I know Barnes & Noble does). While the stores usually have a selection of lower-priced "bargain books" the are encouraging people to spend a few bucks on, they are willing to take anything. It's possible your local library might be doing the same thing. Other ideas are Salvation Army or Goodwill.

See link below - I read about Reader to Reader in one of the women's magazines. After looking at their web site, it seems to fit what you want. They are trying to foster a love a reading by providing books to libraries in low-income areas. Check it out. As soon as I get a pile of books ready, I plan to send them to Reader to Reader.

You can donate them to a library or a place like Salvation Army

Donate them to your favorite thrift store. They will then sell them cheap, get some money for their non-profit, and allow someone on a tight budget to have a good used book.

Check with your local library. They may use them in thier collection if it is a currently popular book, or sell them to raise money to buy new books.

placed an advert in the paper. many human beings have books in simple terms amassing airborne dirt and mud of their abode. attempt an area table sure shop for supplies. in case you have a type letter explaining what your organization is approximately they are in a position to apply that as a "receipt" for what they supply you as a write off for tax purposes. it particularly is terrific to hit them early previously their goodwill runs out.
