Is Phenylephrine as effective as Pseudoephedrine for a nasal decongestant?

I am 34 weeks pregnant and my doctor last night told me it's ok to take Benadryl-D which has Diphenhydramine 25mg and Pseudoephedrine 60mg. I only had one of those left, so this morning my husband went and got me another box but this one says "NEW FORMULA" it now has Phenylephrine 10mg in it instead of the Pseudoephedrine.

I called doc and they said it should be fine to take it still but I want to know if it is going to work or should I return it and get the original kind?

Update:

The pharmacist said that she was shocked my ob suggested Benadryl. She said that can dry up my milk? Anyway, after reading that phenylephrine can block oxygen delivery through the placenta (I can't remember the exact term that was used) I decided to just go with the pharmacist's suggestion of sticking with plain old Sudafed (Pseudoephedrine) and some saline nasal spray. Pseudoephedrine is still available, you must ask for it from behind the pharmacy counter and show ID to get it now though to keep the abusers away.

    HI PASHTA,

phenylephrine hydrochloride is not as effective as pseudoephedrine hydrochloride. that is my personal opinion. but you must remember that everyone is different and what works for you may not work for me.......if you catch my drift....it is so messed up that they are taking the pseudoephedrine off the market just because of a few people who are using it to make

crystal methamphetamine......so now we all have to suffer because of a few that are abusing it. i think that really sucks !!!!

if it was me, i would return it and get the original kind of Benadryl-D....just because of the fact that you are pregnant and that is what your doc wanted you to use to begin with.

i am not sure at this point what the final word will be on this pseudoephedrine situation, but maybe you should have your doc write you a prescription for it so that you can get what he originally wanted you to take....i realize that it is an OTC medicine

but it's my thinking in order to get the original formula that if he writes an rx for it then you would be assured to get what you originally wanted to begin with........i know that pregnant women can take sudafed with no problem...but i'm really not sure about the phenylephrine hydrochloride.....so to be on the safe side if he writes a new rx then you will get what he originally wanted you to have.

i wish you the best of luck.

Phenylephrine will not make you very happy, but pseudoephedrine isn't that much better.

A more effective option is the phenylephrine in topical form (nasal spray or drops), but you only get to use it for 3 or 4 days.

The difference in the oral forms (and between them and placebo) is trivial, and your obstetrician, if he's into trivia, may even prefer the new formula, since phenylephrine increases uterine blood flow.

what mentioned above is true but pseudo ephedrine is not withdrawn from the markets and still GSK produced it,both have advantages and disadvantages Sudafed can be taken orally, doesn't cause rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa) but can elevate blood pressure, insomnia, increased heart rate,etc..while phenylephrine if taken orally doesn't have the previously mentioned side effects but its weaker than Sudafed,by the way the most popular nasal decongestant are xylometazoline and oxymetazoline.my advice to you to adhere to you doctor insructions.

I saw a news article that said some people find phenylephrine to be as effective as peudoephedrine, but most people have better results with pseudoephedrine.

It doesn't work as well for me, personally. A lot of companies are taking pseudoephedrine out of their products because you have to sign for it now. Just go to the pharmacy and tell them you want some pseudoephedrine and take it with a plain diphenhydramine pill.
