Any recommendations for how to make an 8 hour car trip easier for 4 cats?
I'm moving my 4 cats from New York to Indiana. We're planning on making at least one stop, but taking too many stops means a much longer trip. I've got 2 kennels for the back seat of the car, 2 cats in each kennel, but I'm looking for any other advice on how to make the trip easier for them. Also, any suggestions on when to cut off food/water, or if to at all? I'd love to hear from someone who's made a long car ride with pets before.

I would talk to your vet about sedatives. I know my cat freaks out when he is in the car and he gets very carsick. So when we were moving we had to sedate him. Ask if you can get a trial dose as well, because the last thing you need is to not have enough meds for the whole trip. Testing how they act on the meds before the trip is good too and testing will also see how long it effects each cat. My male had two different meds to take at the same time and one made him VERY mean and hungry so we only gave him the other one and it worked great. But I did that because I new which med he was reacting to, I would ask your vet to change meds if any of them have reactions like mine did. The vet will be able to tell you when to cut off food and water as well. Good Luck with your cats and your move. Be careful moving.

As awful as it may sound, you can get mild pet tranquilsers from a vet (in tablet form) and it may be worthwhile giving them half or a quarter each so they are relaxed for the better part of the trip.
I used to have to give them to my cat at night because she was psychotic & wouldn't sleep & now she is much calmer.

Sounds like a pretty crazy road trip! I'll be travelling (by air) with multiple cats soon too so checked out the web for cat travel advice a couple weeks ago. At the website www.catster.com they have a helpful forum for "cats & travel" where people talk about transporting their kitties & how to make it safer/easier/comfortable.
If you want to read about my kitties who are all rescued from the street & featured on a website (as many still need homes) you can read about them at http://www.kittiesinthehood.com/
Hopefully c ya at Catster.

Talk to your Vet about the move and the length of the trip and ask what he or she would recommend. I am thinking they might recommend a mild tranquilizer for them and if so, they would tell you about the feeding.

Benadryl. Check with your vet on the amount, but benadryl will help relax them and make it more pleasant. I believe you can give a whole pill per cat, but check with a vet.
