ACK! Is there any way to recover an Excel file you didn't save?

Stupid question, but I have to ask. I wanted to close a tab in my spreadsheet and accidentally closed the entire sheet -- and clicked 'no' to saving changes. (Yay!)

Can ANYTHING be done to get it back?

There's an 'AutoRecover Save' option that is set by default on installation of Excel - if you haven't disabled it, a copy of your Excel may still be available.

Open a blank excel, and go Menu->Tools->Options.

In the Options window, under the 'Save' tab, see if you have 'Save Auto Recovery Information' box checked. If yes... then copy the location of auto recover (which is just underneath the check box).

Open that location in Windows Explorer and see if you can find the excel.

The above is the only possible way of locating it... if its not there, its gone for good.

Sometimes, letting go seems like the easiest thing to do. But think about this: you've invested so much of your time and energy into another person; you've made a solemn promise; and you still know there's love, even if it's hiding underneath the surface. Unfortunately, if it wasn't saved, it's probably not possible to get it back. But check Excel's help to see if it does auto back-ups...I know Word does, and I find it quite useful in situations like this. I offer my sympathy and apologies if there is no such option in Excel, and my advice would be to save often.

Basically you are SOL. You can TRY a program called File Scavenger (about $50) depending on how important the file is. For the future, backup to a separate location regularly if the file is important. (I use windows backup and it works pretty well).
