I have a boss who is demeaning, to everyone, I think he needs a union to keep him in line . Help please!?

I have never been in a labor union, but I have always known that it's a good thing to get together and stand up against an ogre ...

( it's not just me )..

I work in the sheet metal fabrication / manufacturing industry and I am looking for the right union to stand up against the owner abuse of all his workers.

Oh yeah, I was born in the USA, but even if you weren't born here you have the right to human dignity ... to not be used and looked down on.

The question is how do I find the union and how can I help organize the shop to cut the oger's power to cause misery when most are working hard just to keep thier jobs , and some just to stay in this country ... cause he's using illegal aliens, who I wish well too, to pay low wages.

Please let me know ,

Jonnie

You can always report him to the IRS. They would love to know about those illegal aliens.

You really don't have many options if the employer is a small business owner. You won't be able to start a union. I all depends on the size of the company.

I would look at his competition and see if they need any skilled employees. Then I would change jobs for better working conditions and maybe even better pay with his competition.

    Hope this helps.

Here is the federal law regarding hiring illegal aliens ... You can go to the us.gov website for more info.

    Section 8 USC 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv)(b)(iii)

"Any person who . . . encourages or induces an illegal alien to . . . reside . . . knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such . . . residence is . . . in violation of law, shall be punished as provided . . . for each illegal alien in respect to whom such a violation occurs . . . fined under title 18 . . . imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both."

Section 274 felonies under the federal Immigration and Nationality Act, INA 274A(a)(1)(A):

A person (including a group of persons, business, organization, or local government) commits a federal felony when she or he:

assists an illegal alien s/he should reasonably know is illegally in the U.S. or who lacks employment authorization, by transporting, sheltering, or assisting him or her to obtain employment, or

encourages that illegal alien to remain in the U.S. by referring him or her to an employer or by acting as employer or agent for an employer in any way, or

knowingly assists illegal aliens due to personal convictions.

Penalties upon conviction include criminal fines, imprisonment, and forfeiture of vehicles and real property used to commit the crime. Anyone employing or contracting with an illegal alien without verifying his or her work authorization status is guilty of a misdemeanor. Aliens and employers violating immigration laws are subject to arrest, detention, and seizure of their vehicles or property. In addition, individuals or entities who engage in racketeering enterprises that commit (or conspire to commit) immigration-related felonies are subject to private civil suits for treble damages and injunctive relief.

How is a union going to stop him from being an a@s*s*? Under current laws you have the right to be free from a workplace of harassment. AND it is your perception if the attitude is harassment.

I am not anti-union, but I have seen both sides of the coin-todays union have forgot about the worker and are in a furry to promote a democrat and that is quickly becoming their main purpose as a fundraiser for the democratic party. I have sat with my uncle on a picket line cause the union said we had too, all the while the BA's were living it up. And look at Delphi, the union literally made it too expensive for the employer to continue to meet their demands.

The point is I don't think a union will solve the problem of an out of line boss, sure there may be some short term benefits you could file a greivance (which you can do now and have more of an impact right now), there may be a pay increase or DECREASE depending what is negotiated. Then the union will make it mandatory that you support this cantidate or that cantidate and only that cantidate. I like making my own desicions in life, and I can only hope that this info helps make yours.

    Best of luck to you

I agree with you that unions may only work in very large companies. I worked at a smaller company with about 300 people at our plant and about 5000 across the country. There was an attempt to start a union at the plant and I really believe they would have closed the plant had the employees voted in favor of it. The vote did not pass but they did allow it. The company was pretty fair to the employees without having a union. Unions these days result in too much benefit that promises so many good benefits that eventually they become impossible to pay. They want more and more until they are out of line with the rest of the economy. Look at the postal service. I like the idea that there are a few unions to keep the rest of the companies in line but they are outrageous in their demands. Public unions should not exist. Capitalism offers individuals many choices in their own lives. No other type of economy offers as many choices in every aspect of our lives. Its up to each of us to decide our own futures, our own choice of products, etc but capitalism is being choked in this country with the government deciding what products can be offered, regulations that serve no purpose but to make administration of business an expensive nightmare. Pensions of people retiring are unaffordable so companies move to other nations where the profit margin is larger and they have the ability to pay their commitments. Not working out well for most of us.

Find out which unions are local to your area. Go to some places you know are unionized and ask to speak to a union shop steward or the president of the union. Set an appointment if necessary.

They will be able to help you find out which union is best able to address your concerns and workers. They may not immediately know, but union presidents usually have a list of local unions and their contacts. It will take some searching, but you will eventually get to the right people.

    Be persistent.

Looks like firerookie already has a great starting point. Start there.

There's a website to find the nearest sheet metal union. You can contact them, and see what they say. They'll be more than happy to tell you what you have to do to form a union. Be careful who you tell at work though. It's against the law to fire you for talking "union", but, if you think your boss is an ***hole now, wait till he gets wind of that.

    Good Luck!!

The metal worker's union is a very good union. They work closely with the UAW (United Auto Workers). They should be in your phone book. Good luck. Unions can be a very good thing.

It may take yours to get in a union, so don't expect immediate results.

The last company I worked for , the employees have been talking about unionizing for over 10 years.

    Good luck in your endeavor.

  • Yep, he's a real as-hole. Unionize him or punch him in the face or both(jj)
