there are two ways to do this. you need a specialty tool for both. if you have a cheaper bike, then you will most likely have a freewheel so you need a freewheel remover. you basically put the tool in a vise and take off the wheel and fit the tool to the center of the freewheel and turn to unscrew it from the hub body. the stock torque on this piece is very high, so getting it off the first time is VERY tough, trust me. if you dont think you can do it, leave it to the shop. they can do it cheap, if not free.

on a more expensive bike, a cassette will be used requiring a cassette lockring tool. these are very easy to remove. put the tool in the center of the cassette, then use adjustable pliers to twist it counter clockwise. it should come of very easily.

if you dont fully understand this, ask someone from the bike shop. you have to buy the tools there anyway.

    good luck

There's a special tool called a freewheel remover. Whatever you're trying to do, you might want to leave it to your local bike shop.
