Can a old hp windows 95 computer be useful for a newbie?
Brother in law would like to be on the net but has no income and lives in his mothers basement. My friend has offered up and old computer so he can surf the web. Will it work? Will he be able to put in software? I am a newbie myself so I am almost computer illliterate so I can't answer that question myself.

It can be used but he will be limited to what else it can do. Most software that is made now will not work with Windows 95 and would also be difficult to find any software for it.

It sounds like a <$25 system , BUT it is fine for dial-up and even ethernet/DSL/Cable modem and 'Browsing, eMail ,PhotoShop, Downloading new programs, adding a 2nd HD [probable Max=80 meg @ $20 /memory at $2 to max out, and 90's apps-word,EXCEL,etc... I bought a $50 iMac G3 and STILL can't get all of these applications to work! [500Mhz/128med/30gig/ethernet and modem and USB- go figure ! lol ;-}
