Does "old ice" refers to the ice that had formed a long time, or refers to the ice in the Antarctica? Thanks for your help.

    I believe that "old ice" refers to ice that formed over many many years --- maybe as far back 400,000 or 500,000 years or more. There may be ice in Antarctica that qualifies as "old ice".

    Probably to ice formed long time ago, as the ice layer in antartica or in siberia.
