Any suggestions on how I can cope during the holidays with family /extended family?

Please, someone, anyone, give me a fresh perspective on this one.

Keep to yourself and limit conversations to general themes and pleasantries. Speak only when spoken to. Keep yourself busy, like do the dishes and other chores. Then you won't be around for any "group gatherings".

The attitude and personality you present to them will set the tone for how they will respond. If there is any love in the household, just be yourself and that will loosen them up to be themselves. Don't be negative, critical, rude because that could ruin the holidays for some for years. On the other hand, if it's a great, positive time, then everyone will remember this year's holidays for years. But, if your family is dysfunctional or gives off a very uncomfortable feeling to you, then politely excuse yourself before even going. Call them up and tell them you have previous plans with friends.

You didn't give too much information as to what the situation or conditions you'll be in, but that's the best answer I can give under the circumstances. Merry Christmas!

Make the following rules for yourself:

    - Talk less

    - Only say nice things about others

    - Take some time out for yourself... to do stuff on your own....

    Surely everything will work fine.

    Happy holidays.

It's your home, set the rules. If someone doesn't like it, they can stay home or go somewhere else.
