_IRQL-Less_or Equal is typically caused by a wrong instruction. It is a bus violation that basically says that the I/O resource called did not request CPU service.

The trouble with this error is that it can mask a hardware error, most likely memory. Do a memory test before anything else. i86memtest is available easily. If memory comes up bad continue on after replacing it, since it could have trashed some system data structures as well

If the corruption is not caused by bad memory, then in most cases, this is a device driver issue. Some code has been corrupted and cannot be identified easily. The damage could be in more than one place. Best fix in this case is to do a second level repair, using the XP System CD.

boot CD, do not pick first 'Repair', continue to Install XP

System will look for previous installed XP systems.

    Pick your installation instance.

Now, it will offer to Repair that installation, do that.

Your system will come back minus a few MS updates, just do a few visits to Systems Update and you should be all set.

You may have to format and go for a clean install. I know it's aggravating, but sometimes that's all you can do.
