2001 Plymouth Neon Check Engine Light?....?

My g/f owns a 2001 plymouth neon. Within the last week she has been having some problems with her car. 1) she noticed that the neon starts to sputter/shake, when she comes to at total stop and then begins to accelerate. i have driven the car myself and will note that once the car is up to speed after the stop it runs fine. What would cause this sputtering/shaking as if it was going to run out of gas? 2) after all of this her check again came on. Any ideas why her check engine light would come on? i've been reading that it might have to do with some sort of a bad O2 sensor.

    There are so many sensors on this car that it is not practical to guess which is bad. AutoZone does a free computer diagnostic on the car. Take it there, it may be something stupid like a mass air flow sensor, fairly cheap and easy to replace....

    Okay, first things first. Auto Zone DOES NOT do diagnostics, nor does Advance Auto, or any place that does not have a full service shop. They pull codes if you have a check engine light on, and can give you a general idea of what system the problem is in. Full diagnostic checks are not free, but are much more thorough. If the car has has never had a tune up, start there. Plugs and wires are very easy on a Neon. I do not recommend Bosch Platinum plugs. I tried them in my 95 Neon and they sucked. Go with Champion Platinum or Double Platinum, those are the factory plugs for that car. Your fuel filter is non-serviceable on that vehicle, it is part of the fuel pump assembly in the tank. If you do not regularly use any type of fuel system cleaner, I recommend getting a can of a product called Sea Foam if you can find it in your area, or some other quality brand cleaner. If the car has over 100,000 miles and has never had the O2 sensors changed , that is a likely suspect. Also, mass air flow sensors are not cheap parts for any make of vehicle, and you may have a tough time finding one in the aftermarket to fit that car. Bottom line, if you are able, take it to a mechanic you trust to have it properly checked out before you play musical parts and spend a bunch of money without fixing the problem.

    this may sound crazy but i own a 1997 neon and one day my car done the same thing, almost dying at lights/stop signs but i found out after buying a code reader it was the spark plug that had went out. yes if you will notice the coil pack has tiny wires run to it and the computer knows when the spark plug doesnt fire properly and will log a code for it mine went something like this misfire in bank 2 which #2 spark plug wasnt firing fully replaced plugs and wire and problems went away. you could try this cheap method of replacing the spark plugs and wires. see if that helps and if the light is staying on the only way to get it to go off is take to dealership the code reader will not clear this type of code per the dealership i had to take my car to the computer logs this type of code as a major malfunction and only a dealer can reset this or unless u have a couple of hundred dollars to spend on one and turn it off urself. but i hope this helps.

    O2 sensor or my best guess fuel pump. I had a neon that did that for about 4 months its hard to detect whats wrong unless it happens all the time and a mechanic can test drive it. Mine only did it every now and then and it got worse to were it would shut down after a while till it finally just went out. No biggy if its the fuel pump they arn't to expencive.

    I am sorry to say, it sounds like more than an O2 sensor.

    It sounds more like your fuel pump is going bad or something. I would take it to the garage ASAP!!!! You dont want your gal stranded on the side of the road......That is scary....

    Seriously, it is ot that expensive to get the car hooked up to a computer to find out exactly what is going on. I know it is a bad time, right here at Christmas. but "Better safe than Sorry"..

    I own a 95 Neon and mine did the same thing and it was the fuel pump and filter. As far as the light I'm not sure cause mine still comes off and on all the time.

    I would start with checking your vacuum reference hoses, or your MAF (mass air flow) sensor. I doubt it's your O2, because if it goes out of tolerance the computer compensates and suppliments a 'limp-mode' signal. You'd notice a slight loss of power and horrible fuel economy, but not the symptoms you're describing.

    This car needs a tunr up! I reccomend the bosh platinum plugs. YES THEY COST MORE but they last allot longe. Also get new wires. This is what happend while we were taking a 10,000 mile trip. YES IN A NEON. It was not fun! But that should help you

    It could be several things, Water in the fuel, check your fuel filter and air filter, it could be clogging. It could also be a sensor, we just had a truck do the same thing. Good luck!
