What MB are you using? Some older MBs do not recognise HDD's larger than 137GB. Try updating your BIOS.

I've got a question about this drive, is it your primary drive with windows installed on it???
most likely your motherboard doesn't support drives over 137gb
you need to do something before installing windows because if you just use it like that you will eventually get data corruption and errors.
there are two solutions to this that i have used.
first you could partition the drive using the Maxtor utility or even the windows CD if you are doing a fresh install, that way you may get to use the whole drive but as separate drives in windows.
second you could install a new drive controller in your computer, one that supports large drives. this is a good method to use if you want to have your whole drive as one giant partition.
the first option would be my choice.
boot to the Maxtor disk and install whatever bios drive they have to enable large drives, then partition it so you have two partitions equaling the total, but with nether of them more then 137gb, maybe make it alitle less then that.
then when you install windows you will get to the screen to chose a location to install windows chose the first partition you made and go for it.
good luck

Have you had a look at control panel>Administrative tools>Computer management>storage. You can usually see whats going on with that, There may be a partition that you can merge into one with Nortons partition magic

You can do it. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some RAM/ hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in/ useful

First, check motherboard BIOS settings, it may be clipping HDs capacity.
Second, check any straps/jumpers on the driver.
