Although the school had selected official colors of blue and white, they had no official nickname. An campaign to select a nickname in 1921 failed to conjure support for any one name. So, thinking that "Blue Devils" had been the best of the available choices in 1921, leaders of the senior class of 1923 decided to select a name on their own.
The editors of the two campus newspapers at the time decided that they would choose a name and use it to refer to the school's athletic teams. Thus, the 1922-23 academic year saw the teams first referred to as Blue Devils. No opposition ever materialized to the new nickname and the rest, as they say, is history.

You may or may not hear some quaint story about how they got the name, but it's really the name of their secret society, kind of like the "Skull and Bones" and "Illuminatti". They are pretty local last time I heard, but they are growing in power and wealth.

My opinion? A few of the people at Duke are nerds right? So they need a kickbutt name to redeem their... "nerdiness". BLUE DEVILS ROCK!
