Going on first cruise in January, how safe is Montego Bay, Jamaica?

What can I expect as a tourist from the locals, and what do I need to watch out for?

well expect the locals in the tourist areas to look at you as a money machine because they will try to sell you just about everything. the key to enjoying yourself is to be cautious (with your money, possessions and such) but not worrisome.

go out and enjoy the sights and such but just make sure you are back at the ship before dusk and you'll be fine. i have been there several times and it is a beautiful place so don't be scared. take lots of pictures, try some authentic jamaican cuisine and come back with a nice tan.

Well....first time...I know how that's feels..Montego Bay...is very safely...Jamaica..has more poor people on its streets...that means..wear luxury clothes and accessories...will not be smart...people is so friendly (more than at NYC)..and likes tourists...remember tourist are money makers for them, so they don't want you be afraid...they will be protecting you (in some way), but please keep on eyes your pocket or bag, no much money..on you!..better be with a group..not necessary a tour...although..its better for see...faster..what you need to see...good luck....relax...and enjoy your trip...CHEERS!

I have not visited Jamaica but I have had several friends who have. From what I have been told is that you will be directed not to leave your resort without a tour guide. My friends have said that it would have been very unsafe for them to have gone out without their tour group due to how they felt upon seeing the natives.
