I had an escort that did pretty much similar what you described. The problem turned out to the the center of the flywheel (part bolted to engine) had broken loose from the outer part of the flywheel (piece the transmission bolts to) This made a LOUD clunk bang as the tranny was engaged although the car still moved, could be the axles have somehow fallen out of the transmission (this does happen on occasion)

sounds like a Ford! I've had a few of them and they all made a loud clunk sound and other assorted noises. The worst of them was a pinto which leaked oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and had a leak which filled the foot well in the back with water. Every time I drove it I had to fill the levels in my gear box and transmission. Wouldn't put up with that now, but it is surprising what you will do when you don't have money.

Check the transmission fluid. If it is low, that is defiantly the problem. If its not, try cranking and letting it sit in idle for awhile. I have had that problem with our Chevy Blazer, but it just needed some time to get the transmission fluid flowing. If neither of those work, take it to the shop. It could be something more serious.

Something in your transmission has let go. Try REVERSE, O/D, D and 1 positions, and see what happens. That way you can describe in detail to the servicing tech, what the problem is, which will lead to a quicker diagnosis of what's wrong with your transmission. Either way, I think the end result is going to be that you need your transmission replaced.

i own a shop, and it sounds like you have a CV joint that has fallen out of it,,id look under it and see if its actually theree,i had one do this a while back,it just dropped out ,with out warning,,other wise if its there ,it may be the transmission shot on it,,if it was giving any signs of problems,,it may be gone,,check the fluid,,and also smell of it and see if it smells burnt,,if so ,its probably gone out in it,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s.,,have a good x-mas.

Well I'm not really sure whether you are talking about an automatic or a stick. But it sound like your transmission is gone

Check Your CV joints if on is bad, because of limited slip differentials If one goes bad the car won't move

It is a front wheel drive. Trans is in the front. It gone. 1994? That is a long time.

Sounds like you blew the axle bearings or universal joints. I would check them first.
