Regarding Hindu women in modern India?
Can anyone tell me about life as a Hindu woman in modern India? Most of the articles I've found speak about the history and allude to changes happening. What are those changes? Are women still burned by their husband if their father didn't send them with a large enough dowry? What do they mean by "burned"? Are women allowed to own property now? Are they the property of their father and then their husbands, or are they independent.
I know the new constitution grants equal rights.... but are those rights protected in the social sector?
If anyone who is Hindu in India would be willing to have an IM or e-mail discussion on this and other relevant topics, please IM or email to newbiegranny@yahoo.ca
Thank you,
Sue

Yeah, im not living in India, but by ethnicity, i am Indian/Hindu but i feel like you should know by now that dowries are by law, illegal now in India. It is not a place where women have no rights...there are doctors and lawyers and politicians who are women ....thus, it must follow that they own property and are individuals who are owned by no one as is anyone else in the world. In most places in India, women realise their rights and so does society...only the less educated fall short of receiving this pleasure

The national tree of India, banyan is a very huge structure, long and deep roots and branches symbolize the country's unity. One can find banyan trees in throughout the nation. The huge sized tree acts as a shield, protects from hot sun. This is the reason why the tree is planted near homes, temples, villages and roadsides. In the rural parts of the country, banyan tree is considered as the focal point of the Panchayats and the gathering place for village councils and meetings. The tree is also considered sacred by the Hindus of India. With high medicinal value, banyan is often used as a herb to treat and cure many diseases. Given below is the description of banyan, the national tree of India.
