Husband needs surgery?
My husband is in prison and we have been struggling with getting him his open heart surgery that he needs. The prison system has not taken him seriously and he will die if things do not start happening. He is in prison due to drug related issues as a teenager.
He has also been transferred from Medium to Maximum security because he was doing push ups. He was doing push ups because the cardiologist stated he needs some exercise without over-exerting himself. Over 3 hours later he was having chest pains. His chest pains are on going and documented by the prison.
The facility said that he caused his chest pains and is now responsible for the ambulance and hospital bill. We have been trying to get him surgery for over 2 years. Since June 2006 I have been in contact with the Civil Liberties Union, Commissioner’s office and Medical & Forensic office for the Dept of Corrections and nothing has been done.
Do you have any suggestions on what my next step should be?
He has another year to go. Also I am not looking for judgment from individuals.
He does need open heart surgery and this is all documented by the cardiologist and the Medical department at the prison.
Yes he was transferred to Maximum security because of this. You would be surprised how the prison will waste tax-payer's money!
I don't care if he is released on Early Medical Parole and he has to file for bankruptcy or the prison pays for the surgery.
He needs it or he will die. If he dies I will be taking legal actions against the state and the prison facility.

Call your Senators and Congressman immediately and have one of their caseworkers intervene on your behalf. This is what they are there for. Call them today.
Good luck...

Here is something I noticed that nobody asked.
If you have been trying to get him that surgery for over 2 years (your own words). How long has he been in Prison? If he has been in Prison less than 2 years why didn't you get it taken care of then? Besides if the surgery was that important the Dr.s would have done it a LOT SOONER. Also you didn't say how old he is, to be in Prison for drug issues as a teenager, he can't be very old, early to mid 20's at the most. Don't buy the story of needing heart surgery.
Also like someone else said you don't get transferred from medium to maximum security just for doing push-ups.
If the Dr. told him to exercise without over-exerting himself, push-ups don't fall into that category. So, if he had been doing push-ups for any length of time then started having chest pains then I agree with the Prison system, he caused his own problem. It actually sounded like he was deliberately trying to get out of doing something or just wanted to go to the hospital as a way to get out of Prison. Why should we have to pay his bills?
My opinion is that your husband is nothing but a LAZY LOSER TRYING TO GET OUT OF TAKING HIS RESPONSIBILITY AND DOING HIS TIME.
Like another person said I have no sympathy for him, HE CHOSE TO DO THE DRUGS AND WHATEVER ELSE THAT GOT HIM PUT IN PRISON.
As one person said the cost is $30K but they are wrong. It is closer to $75k. I know I had open heart surgery my self and that was in 1994.
Also if you believe that I don't know what I am talking about and don't understand I will say I have a son that has been in and out of Prison and is in right now and I say the same thing to him, "He made the choice to commit the crime, SHUT YOUR WHINING AND TAKE YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
We need to have more Sherrif Arpao's in this country. If you don't know who that is check out Arizona State Prison System. Arpao started the tent city for prisoners, with pink underwear and uniforms, and also makes them pay something for the meals, he also re-started the chain gangs. And yes he has been investigated for cruel and inhumane treatment, civil rights violations and a few other things but has been cleared in EVERY ONE of them.
HE IS MY IDOL.
With all that done and said my opinion is GOOD LUCK!

One -chest pain does not always warrant Open-Heart Surgery. Two - when a cardiologist recommends exercise, they don't mean strenuous muscle building exercise, they mean slow building cardio exercise. Finally - people to do not go from min to max for doing "push-ups".
Unless you have a documented cardiac cath report that says he is in need of open-heart surgery immediately or he will die, then I see no reason for the tax payers of this country to foot the bill for a convicts ELECTIVE surgery.

The state is responsible for the well-being of prisoners. If you'd like to offer them the $30,000 his operation would cost, I'm sure they would arrange it.

If it was sompething he did as a teenager, then he was prosecuted as an adult... I'm sorry there isn't much sympathy running in my veins for him... sorry. And I don't want my tax money paying for his surgery or anything else. I think a "criminal rights" is a joke. I think if you break a law in this country, you should loose more than just yor right to live outside of prision.

What is he in prison for and for how long?
Maybe he should have thought about his health before he committed his crime. Maximum security is for people that are a risk!
