Net Sleuth.... There Are Many Pay One Time Public Search Sites, That Scan All Public Records And Such

Contact the Social Security administration - give them the SS# and ask if the person is still living.

Ancestry.com is a good site that will tell you if someone is alive or deceased. Classmates.com is another good site, you can see if that person's name is listed and if it isn't, you can post a message on the message board asking anyone in their class if they know what happened to this person.
