Most people wouldn't, even though, in the form of an ethical question, they would say that they would, because it sounds like the nice and humane thing to do.

I understand and agree with Jordan to a point, in that there are many out there that simply will not try, but that's not true in many cases. I can say this with all the sincerity in the world, because I've been there. Once you get that far down, you feel like you can't get back up and, no matter how hard you try, you feel like no one will give you that chance you're desparately hoping for and need just to try to get back into living again.

To answer your question, I do give to the homeless, but I never give money. I've given food and drink (no alcohol), clothing, and even paid for them to have a place to stay for a week.

That is not always true. McDonalds, believe it or not, has strict hiring policies and will not hire felons or those who have been dishonorably discharged from the service. Many of the homeless are mentally ill who do not have a place to go. I understand that many of them could work, I still give to the homeless because it is within my ability to make a person's life a little brighter by handing them a dollar or buying them a hamburger to eat. Why would I pass on that just to make some type of ethical or moral statement by refusing to help the downtrodden?

Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. It all depends whether he looks healthier than me. If he's got a drug or alcohol problem, it doesn't mean that he's not hungry. He needs help anyway. It all depends whether I have anything to give also. The homeless situation is more complicated than that. There aren't always jobs to be had, even at the lowest level. Even if a job is available, the person might have other problems which wouldn't make them a good hire. And getting a job doesn't mean one will be able to keep the job.

I would agree in most cases, as most homeless people have the opportunity to shower and find some decent used clothing, then apply for a job, McDonald's or not. Some have mental health problems or physical disabilities that would prevent them from holding most jobs, so I don't agree to a full extent.

Throwing money at poverty will never solve the problem. The best thing is to try and help those who want to change and have a better life. And there are homeless people doing this everyday. The Bible says that he who gives to the poor lends unto the Lord. I don't want to disobey that commandment.

I don't give money to the beggars themselves, but rather to charities. Drug abuse is rampant in my neck of the woods, and if you give money directly to the beggar, it oftentimes goes to support an addiction. At least if I give it to the charity or institution, I know the money will go where I want it to go. As for the Michael Jordan comment, he meant it to imply that the beggars are capable of working. I would like to think that myself, but many derelicts are in a semi-Catch 22 due to poor appearance, hygiene, or substance abuse. Not that they can't go to the right place to get help for their addictions or job skills, however.

I don't just because that's what I was taught, though I help by giving money to charities/shelters that help the homeless in my area. So I do I help indirectly, I guess.

I totally disagree with that statement. many ppl don't realize that some people just aren't not capable of working. Most people on the street have mental problems and can not think the way me and you can. you also need to be good with people to work at McDonald's, it's a lot more complected then most people think.

they need to learn more about that stuff before they say sh*t like that.
