Everyone so far is wrong, it was Chuck Wepner, he was a fighter of limited talent, he was an alleged collecter for a mafia loan shark. He was tko'd by Ali in the 15th. Here is a link to info about him.

In the movie they have a computer generated fight between Rocky Balboa and Mason "The Line" Dixon. This whole thing was inspired by a past computer generated fight between Muhammed Ali and Rocky Marciano. Marciano refused to quit probably due to his undefeated record.

Joe Frazier. It was in the 1974 "Thrilla in Manila" fight where the both of them went the distance. Ali later said that at no previous time had he ever been so close to death as in that fight. The heat was unbearable, the humidity was near 100% and Smokin' Joe would not give up. Frazier said similar things about that fight. It truly was one of modern boxing's greatest fights by two of its greatest fighters.
