Can you declaw a German Shepard?

My Brother has a German shepard that has extremely long nails she looks very uncomfortable walking. It cost $10.00 everytime we have to get them cut, and they grow quick!

Update:

I'm too afraid to cut them, because I know dogs have nerves in their nails.

And because you have guinea pigs doesn't make you an expert on animals get yourself a new personality!

Declawing him would be cruel beyond words, and I don't think you'd find a vet that would do it anyway.

Why don't you learn how to cut his claws yourself? It isn't that hard. You can buy pet nail clippers. You need to be careful of not cutting into the "quick" because if you hurt him, he will get afraid of letting you do it. If you don't hurt him, he'll probably take it pretty well. A big dog like that will likely require one to hold the dog while the other does the clipping.

I'd encourage you to take him to the vet and ask him/her to show you how to do it properly. We've always cut our dogs AND cats nails without problem.

You cannot declaw a dog because they depend on their claws for traction.

It's relatively easy to trim a dog's nails, and it's painless to them. Dogs have no nerves in their toenails (just as humans don't), but there is a blood vessel called the "quick" that you do have to watch out for. That is the blood supply for the nail.

Before trimming the dog's nails, make sure that you have a trimmer for a large dog. Get comfortable because if you are anxious, you'll only make the dog anxious. Gently grip the paw and spread the pads and take a look at the nail before you start trimming. Place the trimmer so that you cut the nail without cutting the quick and be careful to make a clean cut.

That's about it. It's not at all hard to learn how to do properly. Just take your time when doing it and everything should go fine.

I've never heard of a dog being declawed, but that's just at our practice. It doesn't mean that it doesn't or can't be done, although I don't know why you'd want to go through that expense and put the animal through the pain.

You can cut the nails yourself. The next time you're at the vets for a nail trim, ask the vet tech to show you how to do it. They will be more than happy to show you the proper way to trim nails. And believe me, they sometimes cut too far down too and make the nail bleed. Styptic powder will help with the bleeding. It's like a styptic stick only in powder form, you would just dip the nail into the powder for the bleeding.

Walking him on pavement alot will also help keep the nails a bit trimmed.

No you can not have a dog "declawed" as in the procedure they use on cats.

Regular husbandry of any dog should be weekly nail trimmings, brushing, overall examine of the dog in order to catch any issues before they become emergencies.

If they are having trouble trimming the nails-there are wonderful websites out there that can help with training in this area. I also recommend using a dremel. Yes a dremel. Most dogs that hate the clippers, will in time be acustomed to the dremel and it does a very quick and neat job. Use a 60 grit sanding drum.

One big suggestion is if the nails are bad, go in and have them done once then start maintence weekly. If the dog has issues, do one nail a night. Make it pleasant, not a chore and don't fight the dog. Do one nail a night till they are all done, then do two a night and so on and so forth. One of my dogs will come over, lay down beside me, roll over and put her feet in the air to have her's done.

Go to walmart and buy a dog nail clipper for about $5 and do it yourself... just do a little bit every week or 3 days so that you don't cut to the quick and make the nails bleed. Some dogs learn to love the grooming that involves clipping their nails and others hate it... just make sure you reward him for calming down and behaving when you clip them and it will become very easy and hopefully something you keep up with. Dogs with long nails also can ruin a hardwood floor, so there are many benefits with keeping the nails clipped.

No, you cannot and should not declaw a dog. It is quite cruel to an animal. Like the other answers above, why don't you learn how to trim/cut the dog's toenails? It shouldn't be that hard (unless the dog is not cooperative). Another way could be jogging or walking alot with the dog, because the concrete is a way that helps trim the dog's nails. Good luck!

you can't declaw a dog, silly.

Why don't you learn how to trim the nails yourself? It only takes a few minutes to do. The hardest part is making sure you don't cut off too much -- else it'll bleed and hurt him. They make special dog toenail clippers which have a guard that prevents you from cutting more than about 1/4" off at a time.

I'd venture to guess this German Shepard doesn't get walked a lot. Dogs who get to go out and walk a lot get their nails grinded down naturally. They still need their nails trimmed, though. There should not be such a thing as a "housedog".

You can't declaw them because the "claws" are like our fingernails. Try cutting them yourself. That will save your brother ten dollars and trips to get them cut. Unless there is a medical problem with her feet, then it should be okay...good luck!
