What is the major difference between Pentinum D and the Dual core processors?

I am shopping for a new computer, but not sure if I should get the Pentium D or the dual core system. Obviously, one big difference between these two systems is the price. Assume all the other components (memory, video card, etc.) are equal, what is the major difference between these two processors?

Update:

Pentinum D series and the Pentinum E6300 or E6400 dual core system is in question.

Woah, dude, get the e6300 or e6400, big time. First of all...

    1. The e6300 dual-core is based on a better CPU architecture, Conroe, which is very fast and energy efficient in regards to performance.

    2. The e6300 is new, while the Pentium D is last-generation.

The e6300 and e6400 are dual-core, which makes them much better at multitasking and other aspects.

The Pentium D got beat by AMD's CPUs. The e6300 and e6400 are beating AMD's cpu's, so don't think about it twice; the e6300 is the way to go, and if you learn to overclock it, you can get to at least 3 Ghz and much better performance than any other CPU at that price level.

    I hope I have you convinced :)

Any way you go a three.0ghz processor would be rapid, yet once you have been to income them the twin center will make the single center look sluggish - now the quad center little question make the twin center seem as though a single center in assessment. the adaptation will usually be observed during multi tasking the twin center can manage extra beneficial than the single center without project and the quad center would have the skill to handle extra so which you does no longer would desire to hardship lots approximately bottle necking or lag. Edit: i'd decide on the three.2 ghz twin center for now and a motherboard that must be nicely suited with the quad cores like a socket AM2/AM2+ so as which you would be able to enhance to a quad center at a later time (in basic terms await the three.0 ghz quad cores to return out ;)).
