first of all we have to differentiate between them. divertilosis is the presence of the abnormal protrusion in the large intestine. however this is not painful neither dangerous. diverticulitis is the inflammaiton of the diverticulosis hence it is the pathological situation caused by diverticulosis. hence to get diverticilitis we should have diverticulosis but the opposite way is not true!... however the inflammed situation (diverticulitis) is more dangerous...

Diverticulosis is the condition of having little pockets in the wall of the intestine. Diverticulitis is the inflammation of those little pockets. If they become inflamed and infected, the situation can become dire. If you have the condition, you should avoid skins, seeds and nuts and anything else that you discover causes a flare up.

Actually diverticula are not protrusions in contrast they are more like pockets or crators in the intestine.
-itis means inflamation so when you add it to the end of diverticulitis it means the diverticula are inflammed. A person can have diverticula and never even know it or they can have a major bleed from them.
A major life threatening bleed is how we discovered my Dad had them some 10 years ago. He was bleeding so badly that the blood was puddled in his shoes. He rarely has any problems with them today but occasionally he will have bloody stools.
Diet modification is one of the best ways to prevent complications. Foods such as nuts are notorious for causing flare ups.
