If Ford Giving Nixon A Pardon "Healed" America, Then Why Did Everyone Vote Against Him Because Of the Pardon?

Carter sold the US on the fact that he was "born again."

Yup. The democrats started it.

"Everyone" didn't vote against him. Carter carried 50.1% of the vote to Ford's 48% in 1976, despite the fact that the polls after the Democratic convention showed Carter with a 25% lead. No doubt Ford's pardon of Nixon cost him some votes, maybe even enough to tip the election to Carter, but even one of the most vocal critics of the pardon at the time, Sen. Edward Kennedy, said yesterday after Ford's death that history had proven that Ford was right and he, Kennedy, was wrong. That Ford could have come so close to winning after Watergate, the economic catastrophe of 1973-4, and the Democratic congressional landslide of 1974, is a testament to his political skill and his fundamental goodness as a human being.

I was and am against presidential pardons,I'm a democrat,but Ford was ok in all other areas,and a LOT smarter and honest than bush.I'm guessing bush will pardon all of the republicans who are about to get nailed after the abramoff hearings.......I can't wait to see how much is revealed.

Good point my friend. Even Ford said that the pardon cost him the election. He did anger a lot of people when he gave Tricky Dick a free pass. I always wondered how his henchmen felt that the guy who ordered them to do wrong didn't have to serve any prison time the way they did.

It was too recent...perhaps if he had 4 years, it would have been different. nobody realized the impactof a divided society, and Ford chose what was right for americans, over what was right for his poltical position...he was a dying breed...same as Goldwater

"Everyone" did not vote against him. Carter barely defeated Ford despite the fact that the Republicans of 1976 were recovering from an era of corruption that was at its peak for the 20th century.

People figure disagreeing with Bush now redeems you of anything you did back then.
