Yes you can get sick from someone contagious with viral or bacterial infections. Chicken pox is a great example. A person with chicken pox is contagious until three days after all sores have erupted. That's why there's usually a huge outbreak when it comes about. You are contagious and the incubation period is about two weeks before eruptions are seen.

i think with viruses you are contagious 2 to 3 days before you start exhibiting symptoms, which is why it spreads so easily. you didn't even realize you were sick.
