because the bible is the ONLY source they have for their faith. It isn't as if they sat down one day and rationally decided through long introspection to believe in god.

I'm a Christian and I agree, one shouldn't just quote Bible verses. And I also observe that most Christians do use "their own words" and quote from a variety of sources. By carefully selecting individual verses, you can prove anything. And this is what a lot of non-Christians do – pick and choose the concepts they espouse from whatever source that suits them, or none at all. If I may answer with hope that you might honestly listen, Christians who are wise don't use the Bible to prove it's truth. Rather, they use historical evidence, and yes, there is a ton, to prove that what they believe is true.

When asking a religious question, you should expect to get something to back up the answer. Scripture would be that something. Usually people will ask a questions, and then later respond with " Where does it say that in the Bible" So it's just natural for many Christians to give a response and then give a scripture that supports it.

The reason Christians do this is because once they receive Christ as their personal savior, the Holy Spirit comes to live within their heart and they have the mind of Christ. When you think like Christ, you quote him. Sorry if this is an annoyance to you.

that's the mythology that their understanding stems from. it is the beginning of their knowledge of everything, so naturally it is the highest standard to hold any argument against (to them). if it wasn't then they would have to question the bible against another authority (e.g. science and history) and even against sheer probability. to do this would undermine the authority of the bible, for if the truths in the bible are proved false (to the believer) then how can the message be saved from this falseness?

I could sit here and quote kant, mill and descartes and never be considered anything other than widely read. If you just imagine Jesus and other biblical characters as the foremost philosphers of their time (which is, more or less, what they were) then there's really no problem.

I do. I have then been told "where in the Bible does it say that?" So we can't win. Just do the best we can on our way home to Heaven

I for one generally don't but I would say it is laziness or lack of thought on an issue that is not really resolved enough to put in ones own words.

Good question. I just skip over the bible quotes when I see them; I've read the bible, and it adds nothing to the argument.
