Is the USA a republic or a democracy, and what is the difference?

    The US is constitutionally a limited republic. A pure democracy would require a general vote on each issue. A republic elects representatives to do so. The remarkable thing about the American republic, though, is that the government is limited in its powers and does not have the authority to pass laws confiscating property without compensation, for instance, or banning the general ownership of firearms. When it comes to basic human rights, the US is a little bit anarchic.
